Have a Special Sandwich with Poem #339

PBJF
by Amy LV

Students - this poem was just plain fun to write.  My brain was flying in a hundred directions, just listing all kinds of phrases in my notebook.  Phrases like, "I used to be a bug" and "The opposite of patience" were filling up the lines and adding up to...nothing.  Then, suddenly, the words "peanut butter and jellyFISH" jumped from my pen and I just followed them.  It's just plain silliness!  Playing with the sounds of words is so much of the fun of writing.  What new words might you combine?

  1. Sometimes the best creations come from letting your mind go in its own direction. Cute, cute poem, Amy. :)

  2. Amy,

Today is the start of the Iditarod race and our 3rd graders (and I) are learning and writing all about it. Please please please please write an Iditarod poem or two, for us and the rest of the bright, "dogged," persevering world!!

  3. Hi, Amy. This poem is so cute! I just went to a talk by children's author Pam Smallcomb the other day, and one way she suggested to make things funny is to combine two things that don't usually go together. Peanut butter and jellyfish certainly fit the bill!

  4. Amy - this poem made my night. I wish Violet was old enough to appreciate its awesomeness, but I read it to her anyway. "Whole wheat toast" is the icing on the cake - brings it all together - genius!

  5. Nancy, Cecilia, Kerry, and Bill, Thank you for the notes. Cecilia - I will do my best. But first, I must learn about the Iditarod. Do you have a book to recommend? (And I hope you'll all be writing dog poems!) Kerry - I just love that I'M NOT book by Pam. Bill - Knowing that Violet heard this goofy poem is fun! A.

  6. Amy - Our school gets in on the Iditarod, too. I just read "Granite" to my class - a book by musher Susan Butcher. A nice intro to the race and the relationships between mushers and dogs. Gary Paulsen also has some FANTASTIC books about his adventures training for and running the race - Winterdance is an adult one and Dogsong was written for grade 5 and up.

  7. Apologies- that second book was Woodsong, not Dogsong...

  8. This reminds me of a poem I learned way back in elementary school, which I believe was titled "Jellyfish Stew" (can't remember who wrote it). Very fun! I love the ending line: "Of every sandwich never made...". I love trying to twist common sayings like that...
